The decisions dataset

Every route this survey ever considered, and why it stands where it does: published and ranked, published but held, withdrawn, merged, measured but never given a page, or proposed and never measured. One row per route per run, one reason code per row from a fixed registry, the rule it applies, the date, whether a machine or a person decided, and the numbers the rule read. Built 2026-09-26; rebuilt with each deploy that changes the counts.

Why publish this: a climb missing from the rankings is a decision, not an oversight. This table lets anyone check the decision — and tell us when a rule got a road wrong (the report form takes corrections; no account needed).

Stages

adopted
Published and ranked (or in the annex) — the route cleared an adoption door and every rule that has run since; its row names the door or the rule that ranked it.
listed
Published but held from the rankings for a person's ruling — an instrument raised a doubt the machine cannot settle (a re-line the LiDAR could not arbitrate, a driveway at the steepest window …).
retired
Once published, since withdrawn under a dated rule — the row names the rule and keeps the numbers the page had; its line is in the geometry bundle.
duplicate
Merged into another page (the row says which).
measured
Measured in a survey run and never given a page — below every door, off the state road inventory, a duplicate, or held by a gate; one row per run.
discovered
Proposed by discovery and never measured (outside the run's bands). Kept in a separate file.

Columns

route_id (section/slug@event — the event is corpus for the live page, a retire ledger, or the run that measured it), section, state, run, stage, status_now, reason_code, rule_id, decided_on, decided_by (machine, or human when a road-review verdict or a ruling by the editor applied), evidence (JSON — only our own numbers: gradients, lengths, inventory coverage, door names, the verdict word), supersedes, geometry_ref, slug, name. Human verdicts publish the verdict word only, never the review text.

Geometry

Every row with a line, as gzipped GeoJSON (WGS84) split by layer, section and state so each file stays small; the same lines in one GeoPackage (decisions.gpkg, 121.3 MB) is in the archive release, too large to serve here.

Licence and provenance

Open Database License (ODbL) 1.0, like the rest of the survey's data — see licensing. Routes derive from OpenStreetMap (© OpenStreetMap contributors, ODbL) and public road inventories; elevations from national 1 m LiDAR surveys, public-domain USGS 1 m LiDAR, swisstopo's swissALTI3D 0.5 m LiDAR, Austria's national 1 m airborne-laser terrain model and IGN's LiDAR HD 0.5 m laser surveys.
